Not only did Thursday’s class show me how little I knew about architecture, but I also realized how much architecture shapes the way live and our surroundings. In my past experience when traveling with my family, my mom has always made us look around and observe our surroundings as much as possible. When we went to Le Louvre, I now realize that I did not appreciate it enough. The contrast of buildings and the infinity pool were amazing to see in the setting of Paris. Through out my travels I have taught my self that I need to appreciate buildings and the culture while I am there rather than after wards. This is where I thought about Macherey’s quote “to know the work, we must move outside it”. I related this to a trip that I went on two years ago to Tanzania, Africa and taught children ages 3-5. While I was there, I was trying to teach the children as much as I could and would stress my self out because I felt that I could not get through to the children, as the language barrier was interference. After I left the country I cried because the children had taught me so much, and I learned so much from them. I had to leave the situation and remove myself to really be able to reflect on my experience.
