The other day in class we were talking about the creators of Star Wars, Star Trek and really any other movie producer/writer who comes up with a whole new idea to make a movie. We were discussing whether it is just as creative to come up with these new ideas or to make comical spoofs, making fun and joking about the common scenes and characters from these stories. I said that it takes a whole lot more creativity to think of a whole new concept or movie that millions of people will spend millions of dollars to watch. Then a few classmates mentioned that it is just as creative to think of spoofs of those movies. I couldn’t disagree more!
First of all, comedies are the easiest types of movies to make. The other day I was talking to Jiggy (I will use his post name to secure confidentiality), who is very active in the Rollins’ campus movie fests, about making movies. He has been making movies ever since he got to college. He says that comedies are by far the easiest movies to make mainly because sometimes you can try to make a drama or a suspense film but if it sucks then it turns into a comedy.
Second of all, in order to make a spoof movie, you have to take ideas from other movies, using very little of your own creativity. Of course it takes a lot of wit and a great sense of humor to make a spoof. But to compare this creativity to someone who decided to write a story about a space farmer in a far away land, using mythical creatures and mythical forces, and turning this story into a multi-multi million dollar story that have lasted for decades and will continue to reign over all of sci-fi movies more decades to come is crazy. How can you compare the two in terms of creativity?
