Our class discussion about Bourdieu was very interesting to me because the changes he was talking about are still occurring today. I definitely agree with what we talked about with people needing immediacy. I feel like most people don’t want to wait for the next day newspaper or week later magazine to come out and tell them about the event that just happened now when they can read about it online right away. I can relate to this because I used to read the NY Post and Daily News everyday at home but when I came to college I started to read the news online because it was easier to obtain. Now when I go home and see the paper it’s old news to me because I usually read about the same thing the day before on the internet. This is even the case for television because the internet is even more immediate than TV as well. An example for me is how I usually read Perez Hilton during the day and because of that I don’t need to watch E news as much at night because by the time it comes on I usually know all the celebrity gossip. I think because of this so many newspapers and magazines are either stopping press or firing a bunch of reporters now because that way of information is not as in demand as it used to be. To be a really successful reporter you need to have not only be a journalist but someone who has their own television show, website, facebook fan page and a followed twitter or blog and even a logo. I found it really fascinating how as soon as we put in Anderson Cooper or Oprah’s name in google all these things came up immediately. Even though they are the most watched and probably trusted journalist and TV personalities when you really look closer it’s really all about the hype. It was ironic how on Anderson Coopers page he had weird titles of stories to get people’s attention but most things on his website were just distractions for the real news.
