Foucalt: "Inspection functions ceaselessly" (94)
These three words describe Foucalt's theory and they also describe the fundamental aspect of our modern society. Everywhere we go, everything we do, everyone we interact with: it is all monitored. Not to sound like a paranoid Hollywood thriller, but no where is safe. Privacy is a foreign concept to our culture, and our generation does not grasp the concept that there was a day when technology did not allow for a constant monitoring.
Foucalt's use of the plauge and the Panopitcon are two examples that allow us to understand the "nation of inspection" that we live in, on a more basic level. There is absolutely a power that is omnipresent, and visible, but unverifiable. At an early age it is ingrained in us to follow the law even if we do not physically see a police officer. We have a small voice in our head, and a concious that gives us a bad feeling if we break from the rules of society.
Although we are brought up with these rules and regulatins, we are the ones that continue to carry them out : we are in charge.
