"our society is not one of spectacle, but of surveillance"
I disagree with this statement. I think right now we are both in a society of spectacle and surveillance. It is clear that surveillance is becoming more and more popular as technology improves. Almost every electronic item we have could be used against us for surveillance. Reality TV shows are on almost every single channel now. It is almost impossible to not see a reality show on tv at some point. We use things like Twitter to receive news almost instantly. However, the spectacle still exists.
How else can one explain Valentines Day? We all go out, buy cards, flowers, and candy for loved ones because we feel this is how to show we care. On Super Bowl Sunday we gather together to watch one game even if we don't care about it. Some people simply watch it for the commercials! Millions of people vote every week for which contestants should remain on American Idol.
Therefore, I think it is fair to say that we still live in a society of spectacle, but we also are starting to live in a society of surveillance. They can even be connected to one another. Cable companies can keep track of what exactly you are watching and when. This way studios can plan prime time shows and events for times when people are watching. I don't think we will ever be able to live in a society that isn't one of spectacle because this is what makes companies money! Where would card company's be if we didn't all go out and get cards for holidays and birthdays? I believe that surveillance will further push more of a spectacle on us and make us want to be part of more.
