DBA126, Jencks

In class we viewed many different buildings that depict different themes discussed in Jencks’ article. One that particularly stood out to me was Tradition Reinterpreted. I began to think of different places I have been where this takes place. While I was in Yokohama, Japan our ship was docked at the Osanbashi Pier. Once we were inside of the port terminal we realized it actually looked like you were on a ship. To design a port where international ships dock like ocean liner I thought was a great example of tradition reinterpreted, as well as double coding. The port reminded you on its purpose, a place where you boarded and disembarked from a ship.

Jencks proposes many ideas about how the old and new come together to create the future. On page 281, Jencks writes, “the present mode looks disturbing, partly because it is both strange and yet very familiar.” I feel this quote does explain many structures we see. The Osanbashi Pier was familiar because it reminded us of what we already knew. But to actually create and reinterpret something old, the architect created something very new.

SAV, Jencks

DBA126's reference to Jencks idea of the old and the new made me think of an experience that I had I had home. It is interesting to take something of the past and to make something knew out of it. A new resturaunt opened up in the town next to me. It replicated a diner from the 50's in the sense that it had the same feel. The only difference was that the diner was modern. Instead of having a jutebox that plays cd's the jutebox was run by an ipod and the customers could pick music selection from the ipod. Another difference was that at every table their was a computer screen where customers ordered their food and drinks. After the order was placed a waitress would bring it over when it was ready. I thought that this was a great example of something new and old. The resturaunt took the idea of a 50's diner, but made it modern.

Thank you for your interesting example (Osanbashi Pier). It is great that these terms made you think of a structure you saw during your abroad experience. Just remember posts should be at least 300 words.

Sav-That is a good example of old and new. I would love to eat there it seems like a very unique experience. This post is too short however. Just remember each post should be a minimum of 300 words.
